Medicaid Rate Cuts Lead to Layoffs at Aurora Mental Health and Recovery

Aurora Mental Health & Recovery, a nonprofit running 11 mental health centers, is cutting 111 jobs—mostly administrative and support roles—effective June 30, 2026, due to a $6.5 million revenue reduction and a $7.2 million Medicaid reconciliation payment demanded by the state after Colorado’s reimbursement rates were slashed. This decision reflects a growing crisis for organizations like Aurora MHR, which rely heavily on Medicaid funding to provide critical mental health services. The cuts are forcing organizations to eliminate positions, scale back operations, or even close programs entirely, leaving vulnerable communities with reduced access to care. The situation is exacerbated by years of underfunding and rising operational costs, pushing organizations to the brink of financial instability. Without adequate reimbursement rates, these nonprofits cannot sustain their missions, threatening the stability of Colorado’s mental health safety net.
